Name of Institution:  Spanish-American Institute

Mission: (note:  The following institutional mission statement will be reviewed as part of the Self-Study process.)

The Spanish-American Institute’s mission is to provide effective skills training to individuals seeking entry-level office employment.

Philosophy—the Institute serves a largely foreign-born population which faces a double challenge:

·        to acquire entry-level office skills in keyboarding, accounting, computer operation and

·        to improve English language ability.

The Institute believes that students who can anticipate progress on both fronts from the start of classes are more likely to begin and to successfully complete training.  Courses and programs at the Spanish-American Institute permit an individual to pursue these two goals simultaneously.

Objectives—The Institute implements this philosophy through:

·        the establishment and maintenance of an effective faculty

·        the development of business, computer, and language courses and programs

·        the integration of a varied English as a Second Language course sequence.

Type of Accreditation Sought:  The Institute seeks CEA programmatic accreditation for its English-Plus course of study.  ESL-Plus is a full-time course of study for F-1 visa students.

Organizational Structure:  The Spanish-American Institute is a not-for-profit postsecondary institution licensed by the New York State Education Department as a registered business school.   The following organization chart shows lines of responsibility:

V.  Self-Study Resource Commitments

The Spanish-American Institute will provide the time, technical, clerical, and other support needed to undertake and complete the self-study.

Released Time and Compensation:  The self-study coordinator and other staff will receive released time for meetings and other work connected with their self-study assignments.  Faculty will receive compensation for meeting time and other work connected with their self-study assignments outside of their normal teaching schedules.

Faculty and Staff Meetings and Communication:  The Institute will also hold at least two general faculty and staff meetings during the self-study process to discuss the accreditation process and the self-study committee report drafts.  Full faculty and staff meetings are held on Saturdays.  Faculty and non-senior staff participants receive compensation for attendance.  To assure widespread input, self-study drafts will be made available to faculty and staff with requests for comments.
