The Program Development, Planning and Review Standing Committee on Student Services is responsible for the Student Services sections of the CEA Standards for the overall Program Development, Planning and Review process as well as for the Institute's response to Student Services and overall Program Development, Planning and Review sections of  CEA's October 2013 Required Reports.

 

The four sections below:

  • summarize timelines for Standing Committee work,
  • review CEA’s standards in this Standing Committee's areas,
  • provide some initial guiding questions (prompts) for Committee development of its portion of the overall Program Development, Planning and Review and October 2013 Reporting Requirements
  • caption sections of CEA's October 2013 Required Reports instructions relevant to this  Committee

President Ferraro, Coordinator will develop and distribute the "Committee Charge" in consultation with Deans Davis, Schiffman and Schwenke.

The First Student Services Standing Committee Meeting will review assigned standards, review guiding questions, define needed documentation, and develop work plan.

II.  CEA Standards:  Student Services

The following Standards are to be addressed by the Program Development, Planning and Review Plan Standing Student Services Committee.  Each Standard below is followed by a brief summary, illustration, and/or excerpt from CEA’s Discussion for that Standard and page references for further review in the CEA Standards document.  

 

Standard 1: Admissions policies are consistent with the objectives and mission . . . .  The admissions process ensures that the student is qualified to enroll in and to benefit from the instructional program . . .  (p. 27). 

 

Standard 2: The program or language institution provides academic and personal advising and counseling, as well as assistance in understanding immigration regulations . . . .” 

 

CEA Discussion: “Academic counseling also includes helping international students understand the U.S. system of education and academic behavior. “  (p. 28)

 

Standard 3:  The program or language institution provides pre-arrival and ogling orientation . . .  [about culture, community, immigration, health, etc.] (p. 29).     

Standard 4: The program or language institution seeks to ensure that students understand policies regarding enrollment and registration (p. 29-30). 

Standard 5: Students have access to health insurance if required . . . . (p. 30)

Standard 6:  Students have access to social and recreational activities that provide a cultural context for their language acquisition and other studies, as appropriate.  (pp. 30-31).

Standard 7:  The program or language institution clearly states and fulfills its responsibilities regarding student housing..

 

CEA Discussion:  While this standard applies mostly to schools arranging dormitory or home-stay housing, it does ask that the school have someone available for counseling as needed or in emergencies (pp. 31-32). 

 

Standard 8:  The program or language institution clearly states and consistently provides the extent of student services described in any written, electronic or oral promotional information or in agreements. 

 

III.  Some Guiding Questions or Prompts for Committee Consideration

The following guiding questions are intended only as prompts for Committee discussion in developing it portion of the Student Services portions of the overall Program Development, Planning and Review Plan.  The Committee will likely develop other topics for discussion.

1.       Do the Catalog descriptions of student services need to be updates?

2.       Are descriptions of student services online and in other written documents consistent?

3.       Are surveys and other measures of Student Services available and adequate?
