RE:

Length and Structure of Program of Study: Standard 2

Curriculum: Standard 2

Date:

July 30 , 2013

Length and Structure of Program of Study: Standard 2

Curriculum: Standard 2

Tasks: To demonstrate that:

  1. the ESL-Plus Course of Study’s curricular design clearly indicates how students progress through a full course of study and
  2. the course goals, course objectives, and student learning outcomes are appropriate for the curriculum, and aligned with each other.

ESL faculty now record grades for grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening as well as writing and speaking on the revised bi-monthly exam/attendance roster.

These additional grades allow the Institute to demonstrate that course goals, objectives and student learning outcomes are aligned to ensure the curricular design allows for students to successfully progress through the full ESL-Plus Course of Study.

Faculty workshops include training on how to use speaking and writing assessments with the attendant rubrics which are modified by units and levels in order to assess these two skills.  For example, the May 18, 2013 Faculty Meeting Workshop: Developing and Using Speaking and Writing Assessments and Rubrics: Dean Davis and Professor Christina Cavage.  http://www.sai2000.org/FacultyMatters/Minutes/20130518FacultyMeetingAandWorkshopMinutes.html

Pearson's NorthStar "MyLab" on-line pre and post test are used to evaluate students in speaking and writing skills. The pre and post test data will also be incorporated in the "SchoolWorks" data base system so as to be more readily available for analysis.

Process: The additional data needed to assess progress in writing and speaking in order to determine student achievement is now being collected and stored in digital format. The bi-monthly exam roster has been updated to include speaking and writing columns for teaching faculty to record these additional student grades.  Teachers now grade students on these skills based on using the speaking and writing assessments and rubrics.  Pre- and post tests on Pearson's NorthStar "MyLab"  include speaking and writing sections starting in late August 2013.  A short training  video has been developed to train faculty and staff on how to administer and score these two tests.  It will be available on the Institute's website in late August 2013.

Responsible Parties:  Dante V Ferraro, President updated the Bi-Monthly Exam Roster Form.  Caryn T. Davis, Dean of Academic Affairs and  Thomas S. Schwenke, Dean of Administrative Services and the Intensive English Language Division chairs, Dr. Nori Panganiban and F. Ann Bush assist and train teachers in using the writing and speaking assessments. Faculty and staff are oriented on how to proctor and score the MyLab writing and speaking tests by way of the online video.

Timeline: The Bi-Monthly Exam form was updated in time for August Bi-monthly Exams.  An on-line training  video was  prepared in July 2013 and made available on line in late August 2013.   MyLab speaking and writing pre and post tests were developed in July and inaugurated in August 2013.

Documentation: A copy of the Bi-Monthly Exam Roster revision memo explaining how to use the revised grade brake-out reporting form was distributed to faculty and staff in August 2013 and is available on the Institute’s website at: http://www.sai2000.org/FacultyMatters/Memos/FacutyMemo20130802BiMonthlyRosterRevision.pdf.

Assessment: Speaking and writing grades captured on both the Bi-Monthly Exam Roster and the MyLab speaking and writing pre and post tests is imported into the "SchoolWorks" data base system for easier analytical access.
