1.      language teaching faculty members have a specific knowledge base and skill set in cases where their bachelor’s or master’s degree is not in ESL/EFL which includes the following:

·        Language teaching methodology

·        Nature of language/languages (e.g., introduction to linguistics)

2.      faculty demonstrates an ongoing commitment to professional development.

The committee's activities include the creation, implementation and evaluation of a “package” of training and professional development activities for all faculty and staff that includes on-site professional development workshops with a focus on ESL theory and practice. In addition, on-going opportunities for faculty and staff to participate in NYSTESOL salons, workshops and conferences, as well as, other events, such as TESOL and IATFL are offered, with partial reimbursement for fees made available by the Institute . The Institute provides faculty and staff with NYSTESOL membership.

Process: Dean Davis will reach out to the Director of the Language Studies Department at the New School for Public Engagement in Manhattan and the Director of the MATESOL program at the New School (with whom she has an established relationship).  The Institute proposes an ongoing collaboration to provide enhanced in-house ESL foundation training activities for faculty and staff to strengthen longstanding workshops and activities in this area.

Caryn T. Davis, Dean of Academic Affairs, locates and notifies faculty and staff of NYSTESOL and other events that are pertinent to professional development.

Responsible Parties: Initial outreach and discussions with New School:  Caryn T. Davis, Dean of Academic Affairs and Dante V. Ferraro.  Subsequent follow through: Dr. Nori Panganiban, Chair of the Intensive English Language Division,  Libertad Grajo, English Chair, Career Program Division
