RE:       Faculty Meeting, Workshop and Luncheon

Date:    Saturday, July 27, 2013

Time:    10 am to 1 pm

There will be a Faculty Meeting, Workshop and Luncheon on Saturday, July 27, 2013.  All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

We are pleased to welcome as a special guest speaker, Tamara Kirson, M.Ed., on faculty in the English Language Studies Program, Division of Language Learning and Teaching, The New School for Public Engagement, in New York City.  She teaches grammar and listening-speaking to English language learners and professional development courses for experienced and new educators.  Tamara received the 2008 Literacy Recognition Award from the Literacy Assistance Center in New York and the 2009 New York Times ESOL Teacher of the Year award.  She presents nationally and internationally and has published in the field of English language learning.  Tamara is the NYS TESOL NYC Region Co-Chair.

Please try to arrive by 10 am so we can use our meeting time to full advantage. Ms. Kirson’s workshop will start promptly at 10:15am. Bring a notebook and pen for the workshop.

Faculty meetings are an important part of our school's professional development activities.  Your participation helps us to meet many accreditation, state licensing and best practices requirements.

Faculty meetings are a great time to meet and get to know your fellow teachers and to exchange ideas and teaching strategies.  The "Idea Exchange" luncheon which follows is also a delicious way to improve our school.

REMEMBER:  The front door of the schools will be closed.  Please enter at 1501 Broadway.  Take the elevator to the second floor.  We will leave your name on a list with security, so bring along photo ID.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

WHAT IS X-WORD GRAMMAR? It’s a linguistics-based approach that demystifies the teaching and learning of grammar.  It focuses on the relationships among grammar elements to reveal the logic and consistency rather than the exceptions in English grammar.

HOW DOES IT HELP OUR STUDENTS TO ASK QUESTIONS? Often question development stymies our students.  They’re unclear which words to include and where to place the different grammar elements when asking a question.  X-Word Grammar clarifies the elements and their consistent order in question construction, making the process visual and kinesthetic.

WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF OUR WORKSHOP? In this introductory workshop to X-Word Grammar, you will “meet” the twenty x-words and discover that they are ubiquitous and powerful in the English language.  You will practice working with X-Words to create yes/no and information questions through singing, movement and reading.  A reading selection from a NorthStar textbook will provide the content for the questions.

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR OUR WORKSHOP? You’ll be given the NorthStar selection to read prior to the workshop.  There will be handouts, but please bring a notebook and pen.   Please also come prepared to join in the joyful process of experimenting with X-Word Grammar which offers our students competency and control as they seek information through questions.  -- Tamara Kirson - kirsont@newschool.edu
