Minutes – Topics Discussed

General Housekeeping: Reviewed the following items –

·        Dean Davis would be happy to lead a Saturday bike trip for all faculty and staff. All interested faculty and staff can contact her by email at caryn.davis@sai2000.org.

·        Dean Davis thanked all faculty and staff for participating in the TOEIC speaking test this summer.

CEA Faculty Standard 1 and 3:

·        Tamara Kirson, M.Ed, on faculty in the English Language Studies Program at the New School, teachers professional development courses for experienced and new educators.  She is also the NYS TESOL NYC Region Co-Chair.  Tamara provided faculty and staff with a two hour interactive workshop on linguistics, focusing on sector analysis as the basis for X-Word Grammar’s approach to question formation. The X-Word Grammar approach to grammar is a teaching methodology, readily used by ESL teachers and learners that can be integrated into the current NorthStar approach to teaching all levels of ESL at the institute.  Thirty on-line post workshop surveys showed high interest in this methodology and approach to grammar. Therefore, since Tamara will be facilitating an X-Word Grammar workshop this fall, as well as other X-Word Grammar workshops on writing at the New School, the Institute will make funds available for some available faculty and staff to attend. These attendees will then become the “experts” in X-Word Grammar for our Institute, and will present additional X-Word Grammar topics at future faculty and staff meetings.

Faculty Standard 1 and 2: Teacher Presentation

·        Dr. Leonila Dolina, a long-standing faculty member, provided faculty and staff with a 20 minute presentation on one of her passions, spelling rules.  Her PowerPoint presentation focused on the value of spelling and how to integrate spelling rules into the classroom by using an interactive game for all levels of students.

At 1:00 pm the meeting was adjourned to a the "Idea Exchange" luncheon in the Garden at Barbetta's where informal discussions of the day’s topics continued 'til dusk.
