Minutes – Topics Discussed

Accreditation Update: Review items for the Commission of English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) visit. Visit is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, July 18, 19 & 20.

Christina Cavage covered the following points during her presentation:

  • Explanation of CEA and why Spanish-American Institute seeks accreditation
    for our ESL program
    • Provides an opportunity for self-evaluation
    • Students are assured that the Institute follows the best-practices and standards
      as determined by a respected national accreditation commission
    • Ensures that our curriculum meets the assessed needs of our students
  • What to expect during visit
    • CEA team ensures the information prepared in our Self-study is being met
    • Team will observe a several ESL classes and interview all personnel
      and students
    • The interviews, observations and review of all Self-study materials focus
      on the 11 areas of Standards as defined by CEA
  • What each of us must do to prepare. No formal preparation is required – all of us should be familiar
    • Our Mission
    • How students enter and enter and exit the program
    • Our ESL teaching standards of good practice
    • Our curriculum
    • Course outcome statements
    • Assessment of outcome statements

NorthStar’s MyEnglishLab Update:

·        Emphasize the need to register and enroll students in Mylab.

·        Demo on techniques that can be used to incorporate MyLab as part of classroom activities.

·        Promote MyLab as a means to provide additional practice for students

·        Incorporate the tools in MyLab for both formative and summative instruments to assess students’ performance and achievement of learning outcomes.

Survey of Workshop

At 1:15 pm the meeting was adjourned to a luncheon gathering in the Garden at Barbetta's on 46th  Street where informal discussions of the day’s topics continued until dusk.
