Minutes – Topics Discussed

General Housekeeping: Reviewed the following items -

Accreditation Updates:

CEA Standards Reviewed and Proposed Responses:

·        Program Planning and Development and Review: distributed a handout to each participant detailing the template to follow in order to fully comply with the standard

·        Orientation (at enrollment and ongoing): reviewed the policy. All participants had received the related documentation

·        Student Achievement: students will take both a pre and post exam at each ESL level in order to document the grade changes at the beginning and end of each level. This data will be an additional criteria used to analyze student achievement

·        Faculty Preparation: Dean Davis prepared and presented a PowerPoint presentation on the TOEIC test (Test of English for International Communication). The modules selected three facets of pronunciation. They are Stress, Intonation and Rhythm. This is one of the instruments that will be implemented to support both new and existing faculty with additional resources to strengthen their ESL teaching skills

TOEIC Workshop:

Participants were divided into groups of eight. They were given guided instruction on:

·        How to access the URL

·        Log on and log off the module

·        Review each of the pronunciation modules

·        Practice selected exercises

·        Each participant had a opportunity to act as the navigator at the keyboard

Wrap Up:

As one group participants commented on the demo and practice. A sign up sheet was distributed for faculty to sign up to learn more about the TOEIC process

At 1:30 pm the meeting was adjourned to a luncheon gathering at La Rista on 46th Street where informal discussions of the day’s topics continued until dusk.
