Prerequisite(s):  ESL I or High Beginner's placement test score

Textbooks:  P. Merdinger and L. Barton, NorthStar:  Focus on Listening and Speaking, Longman, 2003 (or comparable); ); F. J. Ferrraro et al, Elementary English 2:  A Handbook of twenty basic lessons, Spanish-American Institute, 2002 (or comparable text). 

Course Description:  A second level ESL course that continues to reinforce beginning student's vocabulary, spelling, grammar, conversation, pronunciation, and other ESL skills in present, past, and future tenses. 

 

Objectives:  To develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills that utilize the present, future, and past tenses. 

 

Instructional Methods:  An integrated cumulative skills development methodology increases language retention and fluency by stimulating students to make meaning from a new language through active learning activities.  Recorded listening passages build on vocabulary and ideas from background material and exercises.  Students work individually, in pairs, and in small groups on guided, linked activities built around each unit's theme.  Instruction may be supplemented with ESL audio (pronunication) and video material.

The grading scale is:  A=90-100%, B+=85-89%, B=80-84%, C+=75-79%, C=70-74%, D=65-69%, F=60-64%.

 

Course Outline:   In this course outline, each of the text's nine units is divided into the sections listed under topics for weeks 1-3.   Each unit, however, has a different theme and content.   An overview of the content for Unit 1's sections is listed below as illustration.  The topic description for subsequent units refers only to the unit's theme and skills for expression (grammar and style) emphases.

1.  Write out the answers to the questions in Vocabulary for Comprehension.

2.  Write complete correct sentences for Listening B, C, and D exercises. 

3.  Write an imaginary dialogue, following the directions in Linking Listenings B,2.

4.  Rewrite the sentences in Grammar A2 in paragraph form. 

5.  Rewrite the question and answer exercise in Grammar A 2 in paragraph form by turning the questions into statements.  (For example, the first two sentences will read:  "The Friendship Forces looks for people who are interested in other cultures.  They aren't afraid of visiting new places.")

6.  Prepare a guided oral presentation about a friend.

5.  Write a paragraph describing a game show on TV, using the questions in Fieldwork B, 1 & 2 as a guide.

6.  Prepare an oral presentation based on your writing about the game show.
