Course Description:

A practical introduction to using the Internet.  The course emphasizes ways to find and use information on the World Wide Web.  Topics include understanding Internet concepts and techniques, using browser tools, assessing and evaluating information, finding and using information, and creating a Web page. 

Course Outline:

Week 1            Introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web

Week 2            Using Web browsers:  opening and formatting Web pages, using History lists,  and displaying and adding to Favorites lists

Week 3            Using Web browsers:  organizing, editing, and exporting Favorites; saving, downloading, copying, and printing from Web pages

Week 4            Searching the Web:  choosing the right search tool; creating a search string, using Help in a Search Engine; using operators, truncation, and parentheses

Week 5            Searching the Web:  using natural language queries, metasearch engines, and advanced search options

Week 6            Searching the Web:  accessing automated library catalogs, exploring the Spanish-American Institute Library Catalog on-line, and doing the Spanish-American Institute Library "Basic Searching" and "Advanced" on-line tutorials

Week 7            Searching the Web:  searching periodical databases; doing the Spanish-American Institute Library "Searching Periodical Databases" and "Developing Good Research Skills Using the Internet" on-line tutorials

Week 8            Using E-Mail:  composing and sending messages; understanding e-mail addresses; working with e-mail folders; attaching files to messages; replying and forwarding; printing, sorting, and finding

Week 9            Using E-Mail:  inserting links, pictures, and signatures; creating and editing an address book

Week 10        Creating a Web page:  Web authoring basics

Week 11        Creating a Web page:  Using WORD templates; inserting, saving, and editing text

Week 12        Creating a Web page:  creating online forms, adding scrolling text and sound, creating and editing links, and testing Web site on a browser

Week 13        Using the Internet for Career Development:  finding and using career education information, finding and using occupational outlook data, conducting a job search, and posting a resume on the Internet

Week 14        Individual Project: TBA with instructor

Week 15        Individual Project: TBA with instructor

Requirements:

Classes will include some theory followed by extensive hands-on application.  Each student will create a portfolio of finished output, including a personal web page.

Evaluation:

The final grade will be based on the weekly average of grades for class participation, assignments, and examinations.

Textbook:

Don Mayo and Catherine Skintik, Learning the Internet:  Fundamentals, Projects, and Exercises, New York, DDC Publishing, 2000, or comparable text.
